Frequently Asked Questions
You do not need a referral to access psychological support through Meliora Psychology. However, if you wish to claim Medicare rebates you will require a referral from your GP, who will complete a Mental Health Treatment Plan with you. Private health insurance rebates may be available without a referral; please check with your private health insurer prior to attending an appointment.
Standard sessions are 50 minutes in duration.
A Mental Health Treatment Plan (previously known as a Mental Health Care Plan) is a plan to support people who are experiencing psychological distress or disorders. It is completed with your GP and will outline the nature of your difficulties, your goals, and your treatment options. This plan will allow you to access a Medicare rebate to go towards the cost of accessing psychological care. At present you are entitled to 10 sessions per calendar year, with reviews with your GP following the 6th and 10th session typically required.
At Meliora Psychology we have chosen to charge below the Austrailan Association of Psychologist’s recommended rate of $300 per 50-minute session. In order to offer quality care our rates are between $215-$250 per hour depending on referral and clinician, equaling approximately $120-$160 out of pocket with Medicare rebate. Third Party Payees are charged at each parties’ standard scheduled rates. Please note that we are not able to offer bulk-billing.
Due to the nature of our session bookings, sessions are required to end at the same time even if you are running late. Please contact your clinician as soon as possible if you will be late to a session. If you are running more than 15 minutes late and the clinician has not heard from you and is unable to contact you, your session may be cancelled, and the full cancellation fee charged.
Please contact Meliora Psychology via phone or email as soon as possible if you need to cancel or reschedule your appointment. If we are unable to take your call, please leave a message on our Voicemail. All cancellations should occur in line with our cancellation policy.
Our Cancellation Policy was created with the needs of you, those clients who are on the waiting list, and the psychologist in mind. When a session is booked, your psychologist will reserve that hour for you. If you are unable to attend, we require a minimum of 48 hours’ notice to cancel your session without incurring fees. This is so that your session can then be offered to someone on the wait list, in the hope they are able to accept. Cancellations made with LESS THAN 48 hours’ notice will incur a $120 fee, and LESS THAN 24 hours’ notice will incur a full fee. Please note cancellations are not eligible for Medicare rebate. If you are required to cancel an appointment due to an unexpected personal emergency, please contact Meliora Psychology as soon as possible to discuss your options.
Fees for psychological and forensic assessment and reports vary considerably depending on the reason for assessment, the assessments being requested, the amount of time required, and the level of detail needed in reports. Please contact us to discuss your specific needs.
We understand how important it is to find the right therapist for you. Although Meliora Psychology do offer telehealth, if you are seeking in-person supports and are unable to attend in Preston, we can try to recommend psychologists in other locations, such as SEC Psychology in Moorabin.
This is also true if you are seeking support with specific concerns that are outside of our typical areas of focus. For example, clients seeking support with Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder may be referred to the OCS Clinic.
We are happy to answer any and all questions you might have. Please contact us through any of the means listed on the Contact Us page and we will endeavour to get back to you with an answer as soon as possible.
